Gun stock oil finishing services

Re-finishing of modern and antique firearms

What is traditional oil finish?

Oil finishing is a treatment of the wood to provide an attractive, long lasting finish. Most modern guns on the market will have a light oil or lacquer finish. The difference between an oil finish and a lacquer finish or polish, is the oil impregnates the wood whereas a lacquer will simply sit on top. Giving the stock much better protection and greatly reducing the risk of cracking due to dryness.

When a gun is oiled, the natural colours of the wood are greatly enhanced. This is achieved using a blend of alkanet root and boiled oil.

There is also a greater 'depth' to an oiled finish, giving a mirror-like shine to the wood. This is from each layer being built upon the next creating up to twenty five hard 'shells' to protect the wood.

Professional craftsmanship

Taught to be the best, by the best. I started my career in 2013 as an apprentice finisher at Watson Brothers Gunmakers. Under the careful eye of Michael Louca, I learned and perfected the skill of finishing. This involved assembly & regulation of the whole gun. From the point of opening, to firing and ejection, the gun must work flawlessly with an exceptional smoothness. This takes a keen eye and attention to detail that goes far beyond the usual standard.

Part of the finishing progress is treatment of the wood furniture. For this I was taught how to apply a Traditional Best London Finish. This is a level of oil finishing that goes above and beyond all other finishes, that is usually reserved for Best quality build guns only. Most gun makers will have their own 'secret' blend of oils which will be passed down through generations.

Working on new and used best London guns for six years, I had developed a keen interest into re-finishing gun stocks. As good as any gun maker could be, an oil finish is a natural enhancement of the wood, therefore it is not uncommon for it to loose shine or gloss after some use. So I decided to pursue a quest to make my own blend of oils that would give a lasting shine to a gun stock after many years of use...

Located in Basildon, Essex I decided to set up my own workshop from home to try and discover the secret formula myself. Years of experimentation with different materials, lead me to discover a mix that will provide a finish that is hard wearing, deep in colour and will keep a shine even after excessive use.

The oil formula and treatment I have created differs from most as its a two-stage process using two different oil mixtures used together with adequate hardening time between. One part is used for thickness and shine, where the second part is used as a hardener.

I am continuously seeking to improve upon this formula and process to re-finish gun stocks, so that I am able to provide the best quality service possible. I am also able to offer different levels of finish to apply to many different styles of gun.

Shane Scase Traditional English oil finish

Used to finish all guns, my very own oil design delivers an extremely strong finish along with unprecedented shine.

Part one oil (Dark) is applied to the stock and left to dry for approximately 2 hours. Part two oil (light) is then used with soft cloth to remove the excess part one oil. The two oils then react, leaving a small percentage left in the wood. The Stock is then left to harden for 24 hours before the next coat is applied.
